Why is this medication prescribed?Pyrethrin with piperonyl butoxide killsparasites and their eggs. It is used to treat scabies (a skininfestation) and lice infestations of the head, body, and pubicarea ('crabs'). Pyrethrin with piperonyl butoxide does notprevent these infestations.
How should this medicine be used?The pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxidecombination comes in liquid, gel, and shampoo form. Usually,one application of pyrethrin with piperonyl butoxide iseffective. However, the treatment may need to be repeated after1 week; call your doctor if signs of infestation (liveparasites) reappear. Follow the directions on the package or onyour prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor orpharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Usepyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide exactly as directed. Do notuse more or less of it or use it more often than directed byyour doctor. Wear rubber gloves when applying it if youhave open cuts or scratches on your hands. If this medicationaccidentally gets in your eyes, rinse them thoroughly withwater for at least 5 minutes. To use the liquid or gel, follow thesesteps: - Use enough medication to cover the affected hairy areaand adjacent areas. Ask your pharmacist or doctor anyquestions you have about where to apply the medication.
- Leave the medication on for exactly 10 minutes.
- Thoroughly wash the area with warm water and soap orregular shampoo.
- Dry with a clean towel.
- Wash your hands to remove the medication.
- Dress in clean clothes.
To use the shampoo, follow these steps: - Shake the shampoo before using it. Then thoroughly coveryour dry hair and scalp or skin with shampoo.
- Use a small amount of water to work the shampoo into yourhair until a lather forms.
- Leave the shampoo on for exactly 10 minutes.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly with water.
- Dry your hair with a clean towel.
- Comb your hair with a fine tooth comb to remove nits(lice eggs and larvae).
- Wash your hands to remove the medication.
If you have head lice, wash combs andbrushes with the liquid, gel, or shampoo and rinse themthoroughly with water to remove the drug.
What special precautions should I follow?Before using pyrethrin and piperonylbutoxide, - tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic topyrethrin, piperonyl butoxide, ragweed, petroleum products,or any other drugs.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription andnonprescription medications you are taking, includingvitamins.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant or arebreast-feeding. If you are pregnant, wear gloves whenapplying this medication to another person to prevent itsabsorption through your skin.
What side effects can this medication cause?Although side effects from pyrethrin andpiperonyl butoxide are not common, they can occur. Tell yourdoctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not goaway: - skin irritation
- rash
- redness
- swelling
What storage conditions are needed for this medicine?Keep this medication in the container itcame in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store itat room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (notin the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated orno longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the properdisposal of your medication.
What other information should I know?Keep all appointments with your doctor.Pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide is for external use only. Donot let pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide get into your eyes,nose, or mouth, and do not swallow it. Do not apply dressings,bandages, cosmetics, lotions, or other skin medications to thearea being treated unless your doctor tells you. After using pyrethrin and piperonylbutoxide, machine-wash (or dry clean) all clothing, bed linen,and towels that you have used in the last 2 days. Use hotwater. Dry everything in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes.Thoroughly clean all bathtubs, showers, and toilets in yourhome with rubbing alcohol. You may have transmitted the parasites tofamily members and close contacts (including sexual contacts);advise them to see a doctor if they develop symptoms ofinfestation. If you have scabies and your skin hasbecome sensitive to the parasite, itching may persist forseveral weeks after the treatment. However, this itching doesnot mean that the treatment was a failure. Call your doctor ifyou have questions. Do not let anyone else use your medication.Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about pyrethrin andpiperonyl butoxide.
